Purac purifies drinking water and waste water in SRI LANKA
Environmental engineering company Purac has in cooperation with the Danish construction company Pihl and Son completed five water treatment plants in Sri Lanka. The two companies will also build two sewage treatment plants together in the capital Colombo and has now been invited to bid on two major projects.
- "There are no Swedish construction company remained in Sri Lanka. Therefore, we have started to cooperate with a Danish partner. We work well together and have a good chance to receive orders for the two new projects which concern the design and construction of an additional water treatment and a sewage treatment plant", says Christer Andersson, Project Manager from Purac which is a part of environmental technology company Läckeby Water Group.
The complete water treatment plants are now providing five small towns, with a total of 95 000 inhabitants 100 kilometers east of Colombo, with clean drinking water. Purac's part of the project is 50 million SEK and has involved process design, electrical engineering and also the supply of all machinery installations and equipment for electrical engineering.
The works on the water treatment plants have taken four years instead of the estimated two and a half.
- "It's been very difficult construction conditions. Waterworks is between 1000 and 1700 meters in a beautiful area with tea plantations, lakes and waterfalls. Because of the hilly and sloping landscape it has been difficult with the placement of plants", says Christer Andersson.
The water which is to be purified is taken from streams and rivers in the mountains and led to the treatment plants. Thanks to the heights the purified drinking water runs by itself through the pipes down to the cities. This saves electricity.
The Danish aid agency Danida has funded the water treatment plants.
Swedish finance institute SIDA is financing the two sewage treatment plants which Purac is building in cooperation with its Danish partner in two suburbs of the capital Colombo.
Purac's part of this project is 90 million SEK. Even here, Purac is in charge of process and electrical engineering and the delivery of all machinery and equipment including the control systems for electrical engineering. Half of the equipment are in place and are installed in one plant. Delivery to the second treatment plant is in the autumn.
The two sewage treatment plants are Purac third mission in Sri Lanka. They should be ready in 2012 and then clean the wastewater from 250 000 of the 4 million inhabitants in Colombo.
Purac has offices in Colombo and a local staff of four persons. The Clients of all water and wastewater treatment plants in Sri Lanka is the country's water authority, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.
