BREAKTHROUGH BY PURAC FOR NEW WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY IN SCANDINAVIA
Environmental engineering company Purac in Lund has signed a contract for an order of app 40 million SEK to Lundtofte sewage treatment plant in Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality in Denmark. The treatment plant will utilize Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology and becomes the first full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant of its kind in Scandinavia. The contract was signed end of September 2011 and the system is scheduled to be up & running already by summer 2012. The project will be executed from Purac's Lund office, while the Danish subsidiary Purac A/S is responsible for installation at the site.
A membrane bioreactor is a process combining an activated sludge system (bioreactor) with an ultrafiltration membrane system clarifying the effluent instead of secondary clarifiers. Main advantages of MBRs are that they can operate at much higher biomass concentrations reducing the system footprint as well as producing higher quality effluent than conventional activated sludge system. Purac will be using ZeeWeed 500 membranes manufactured by GE Water & Process Technologies, the leading manufacturer of MBR membranes.
Lundtofte treatment plant handles sewage from about 125 000 inhabitants, and after completion the purified water meeting bathing water quality requirements will be discharged into öresund. In the long term, the intention is to pump the water to Kalvemosen, which is the first step in a long system of lakes and rivers in Zealand. Kalvemosen is part of Mølleaåsystemet, which is one of 11 action areas under the Danish government's targeted water and nature activities.
Since 2003, Purac is part of Läckeby Water Group, which designs and builds plants for water treatment and biogas production. About 50 of the group's 200 employees are located at the head office in Lund. Turnover for 2010 was app USD 100 million.
